Welcome to The Docks

Originally a 17th century drovers inn, The Docks became a pub as we know it around 1840.  Then called The Cross Keys as many pubs next to churches were, the exterior of the pub has remained little changed.

Over time, the pub became known locally as The Docks although there are numerous stories about how this came about; from being able to see Liverpool Docks from the pub ( you can’t!), to being the place to come for black market deals after the war, to being the place where the drovers would stop on their way to market and dock the sheeps tails, the list goes on and on.

This is one subject that is always a source of conversation and conjecture in the pub but the most important thing to remember is that is not a “dry dock”!
A Dock is a place to escape the dangers of the open sea, to fill up with supplies, refreshments and load up with the latest news and gossip.
We think this is a good description of our aspirations for this special pub. Being a long way form the sea is a minor detail!

This is one of those rare buildings that inspires great affection from its patrons which then leaves the landlords free to concentrate on getting the nuts and bolts of a hostelry right. Well kept beers, interesting and great value for money wines, backed up by food that has integrity all make up the mix.

Outside space has never been more important and we hope you appreciate our small but perfectly formed garden. In the not too distant future, a handful of en-suite bedrooms will be completed, returning the pub to its status as an hotel.
